TOWN councillors have given their backing to an appeal against a decision to refuse planning permission for a skatepark in Mold.

Members of Mold Town Council hit out at the decision by Flintshire Council planners to refuse a proposal for the facility earmarked for Maes Bodlonfa recreation ground.

The town has been pushing for 10 years to get the skatepark.

Cllr Bryan Grew said: “Someone has to stand up for the children of this town. There are some people who seem to be determined to deny them facilities.

“If you can’t have recreation facilities on a recreation field then what is the point.”

After the plans were refused young skaters spoke of their disappointment.

The youngsters said the facility would keep them off the streets.

Cllr Tony Cattermoul urged the council at its meeting on Wednesday to lodge an appeal against the decision which is the third application that has been refused over the years.

Council planners refused the application on the grounds it would encourage anti-social behaviour.

But a report presented to councillors by PC Janette Stott said police felt the development would not lead to a rise in anti-social behaviour.

The town council vowed to lodge an appeal with Flintshire Council.
