GOALKEEPER George Deniz has already achieved what others can only dream of – and he’s only 14.

George, who attends Mold Alun school, has signed a two-year schoolboy deal with Manchester United and has already been on the winning side in three matches for United’s under-14 side.

He said: “I’m very excited about this. I just want to become a professional goalkeeper.”

Proud mum Caroline, of Pontblyddyn, said: “He started when he was six years old as an outfield player but once he went in goal, he never looked back.

“I’m very proud of him – I’m delighted.”

George, who supports Aston Villa and Wrexham, played for Buckley Colts under manager Lee Starkey. He then joined Airbus FC’s academy where he was given training with the club’s first-choice keeper Chris Doran.

Caroline said: “The turning point came three seasons ago when he joined Buckley Colts.

“They spotted something in him and asked him to go to the Airbus Academy where he flourished.”

She added: “I’d like to thank Lee and Chris. They are the unsung heroes of football, they give so much.

“George was asked to join the North Wales regional development squad and the Manchester United scout offered him a six-week trial after seeing him train. We were there two weeks and they offered him a two-year schoolboy contract.”

During his first training session at the club’s training ground at Carrington George was coached by the team’s veteran first-team goalkeeper, former Dutch international Edwin van der Sar.

Caroline said: “He was so excited, that was his first-ever session. It is a dream come true for him. Manchester United is a very big club but they are very family-orientated. They do care.”

Lee Starkey, manager of Buckley Colts and academy director for Airbus FC, said: “George has always been a good keeper but over the last couple of years he has progressed and it is down to his hard work.

“He has a bright future. He has got the right attitude to stay at Manchester United.”

And George’s brother, 11-year-old Richard, who plays in goal for Mynydd Isa’s youth team, looks like he could follow in his footsteps.

Caroline said: “Richard is really pleased for his brother – not jealous at all!

“Manchester United have said they will keep an eye on Richard, so he is very pleased.”
