THE devastated family of a serviceman killed in Iraq are demanding to know the whereabouts of their son’s memorial.

Bob and Ann McFerran were sickened last year when stones laid in a Connah’s Quay garden in memory of their son Peter were ripped out of the ground by vandals.

The memorial was put in storage for safe keeping but the family has been left in the dark about its whereabouts.

Mrs mcFerran, of Fron Road, said: “It is devastating not having anywhere to go and show our grief. We thought if we could find a suitable place then we could have it back.

“We do not even know where it is, they won’t tell us where it is. It has taken its toll.”

The family had been unhappy with the location of the original garden in Mill Lane, off Wepre Drive, and said they were upset the plaque was only a feature of the garden.

They are now calling for the memorial to be placed in the town’s Salvation Army Church.

Mr McFerran said: “We want somewhere to go and think about Peter.”

Former Mold Alun pupil Peter, 24, a senior RAF aircraftsman, died in an attack at Basra Airport in July, 2007 and the memorial was set up to honour his bravery and that of Sgt Malcolm Wigley who died in the Falklands War in 1982.

Mrs McFerran said: “The church would be the perfect place for it. Peter would prefer it to be there. That was the church that he was brought up in and he enjoyed his time there.

“He does not want to be tucked away so he could be forgotten. It is so people can see the sacrifice he made.

“We can just go and sit there and think. After all, that is where Peter went to Sunday school and was happy.

“We do not want it returning to the allotments nor do we wish it to remain in storage for evermore.

“We are so proud of Peter and he was so proud of being in the regiment.”

The matter will be brought up at the annual meeting of QuayCat, the organisation which looks after the gardens, in October and the family will be asking for the memorial to be returned and placed in the church on Dee Road.

A spokesman for QuayCat said: “The matter will be sorted out at the meeting.”
