A GRIEVING mum is to take her campaign for a change in the law to the House of Lords.

Christine Jones wants a change in the law after her son, Peter, died after being punched by Gafyn Denman in Buckley.

His killer was sentenced to three years and four months earlier this month for manslaughter.

Mrs Jones, 49, has spoken of her pain at the length of the sentence and is hopeful changes could be triggered through a meeting with Baroness Helen Newlove.

Baroness Newlove has been active in pushing for reform and increased community safety since her husband Gary was killed in Warrington three years ago after confronting a gang of youths.

Mrs Jones, of Brook Street, Mold, said: “I am looking to make contact with Helen Newlove. She is in the House of Lords and she is someone who has been through something similar to me.

“She has lost her husband and I have lost my son and I know exactly what she is feeling.

“There has to be changes made as the sentence my son’s killer was given did not represent justice whatsoever.

“He punched my son and yet could be out by next Christmas. I will not be able to enjoy it at all.

“He killed my son. The difference between murder and manslaughter is very unfair, considering he still did it and admitted it.

“A sentence of this length is not going to put lads off behaving in a similar way.”

Her pleas for assistance from Baroness Newlove come after family members launched a petition calling for changes in sentencing guidelines, which they hope to present to Parliament.

As she steps up her battle to make political progress on the issue, Mrs Jones has spoken in recent days with Delyn MP David Hanson and has been given some positive news.

He said: “The death of Peter Jones was deeply shocking and my thoughts are with his family who are having to deal with the death of a loved one in such appalling circumstances.

“In light of the current sentencing review, I have written to the Justice Secretary to see if he will look again at the sentencing framework applied to so-called ‘single punch cases’.”

A former pupil at Mold Alun school, Peter, 24, died in May following the attack by Denman on Precinct Way, Buckley. His father, Peter Snr, was assaulted during the same incident, with Ross Taylor, 22, handed an eight-month sentence.
