TWO Flintshire soldiers killed in action have been honoured in a memorial concert.

Letters of thanks from the families of Lance Corporal Alan Cochran, 23, of Pentre Halkyn, and senior aircraftman Peter McFerran, 24, of Connah’s Quay, were read out during a concert in Wootton Bassett by North Wales choir Cor y Gogledd.

Choir member and organiser Esmor Davies of Church Road, Buckley, said the concert was a way of thanking the Wiltshire town where people line the streets in silence to pay tribute to soldiers killed in Iraq and Afghanistan.

He said: “It was fantastic. We had an amazing welcome the whole weekend.

“The concert was great and we could not believe the turnout. We had a full church.

“We had an open air concert outside the town hall and the main concert was in St Bartholomew and All Saints Church. We raised the roof.

“I have to thank the choir who gave 110 per cent. It was a wonderful performance.”

Lance Corporal Cochran was killed in Afghanistan in June and senior aircraftsman McFerran was killed during a motor attack in Iraq in 2007.

Both families had requested Welsh hymn Calon Lan to be performed at the concert.

Mr Davies said: “Even though they could not speak Welsh both of them sang the song everywhere they went in the world.

“Wootton Bassett makes the whole country proud. They are wonderful people.

“This is a way of thanking them and Wales is known as the Land of Song.

“They said it was one of the finest concerts they had ever heard in Wootton Basset. We were very pleased.”

More than £750 was raised for the church and the Royal British Legion thanks to efforts from members of the choir.

A DVD of the concert is set to be released with proceeds going to Armed Forces charity Help for Heroes and a special concert by the choir is set to take place in North Wales before Christmas.
