A TOP tour guide is inviting people to dust off their walking boots for World Heritage Week.

Bryn Hughes, who is based in the Ceiriog Valley will be leading a series of tours exploring the landscape and history along Pontcysyllte Aqueduct and canal near Llangollen.

The tours are part of a week-long programme of events which kicks off on Monday, September 20, ending with a family fun day at Trevor Basin on Saturday, September 25.

Organised by Wrexham Council’s economic development department, the event will offer local people the chance to celebrate and enjoy the World Heritage Site, while also raising its profile, attracting visitors to the county and supporting the local tourism economy.

Bryn, who has been helping visitors discover Wrexham and North Wales for many years, is a qualified guide with expert knowledge of the area.

He said: “I’m inviting people to join me for a scenic coach tour, stopping off for a number of short and relatively easy walks.

“I’ll be talking about the local history and industrial heritage along the canal corridor and surrounding area, and I’m sure people will find it a fun, interesting and enlightening experience.”

The coach will set off from Trevor, passing through Llangollen en route to the Horseshoe Falls for the first walk.

Then it will be off to Chirk Aqueduct for the next leisurely stroll along the Welsh-English border.

Then there’s a gentle journey through the beautiful Ceiriog Valley before returning to Froncysyllte for the final walk.

Other walks will also be on offer during World Heritage Week where you can find out about the ancient trees, history, geology, birds, bats and other nightlife in the area.

There’s also plenty of opportunity to take boat trips over the aqueduct or visit the Meter House at the Horseshoe Falls, while children can enjoy canal art and a special story walk starting under the Red Hand at Chirk Castle gates.

All of the walks are free, as are talks on archaeology, the Plas Kynaston Canal, Offa’s Dyke, the restoration of a heritage boat and the great Thomas Telford.

Cllr Bob Dutton, deputy leader of the council with responsibility for the World Heritage Site, said: “Pontcysyllte Aqueduct and Canal is now officially among the greatest heritage sites in the world and will become more and more important to the local economy and Wrexham as its profile increases.

“Events like World Heritage Week are a great way to spread the word and celebrate a fantastic part of Wrexham’s heritage.”
