GRIEVING parents whose son was killed in a car crash are helping two sick youngsters in his memory.

Football-mad Carl Sutton, 26, from Connah’s Quay, died when his car hit a tree on Sealand Road on February 21.

Friends and family have raised almost £1,400 since his death and now parents Graham and Myra have decided to share the funds with poorly children in the area.

After an appeal in the Leader, the couple have decided to help Millie Williams, five, from Connah’s Quay, who suffers from a rare and incurable disorder.

Also to receive a cheque is cancer sufferer Sophie Edwards, 16, of St Martins in Oswestry, who has just months to live.

Myra, of Cheriton Close, told the Leader: “I hope this money will make their lives more comfortable. It is a nice feeling that we are able to help them.

“At the end of the week, Carl would empty the loose change from his pockets and put it in a jar. We have opened the jar and counted all of the change and have added that to the fund.

“Carl has donated personally to these girls."

Millie was diagnosed with lissencephaly at five months old, a condition which means she is unable to walk or talk.

Mum Debbie Jones, 41, and friend, Helen Marl, who runs Llwyni General Store in Wepre, launched a mammoth fundraising mission to improve Millie’s quality of life.

The single mum, who also has a seven-year-old son, Jacob, says the Suttons’ kind donation will go towards a specially adapted bicycle for Millie.

“We are so grateful to the Sutton family because we are that much closer to our target now,” she said.

“The bike will cost us £4,700 and with this donation, we are just £300 away from buying it.

“When we do get to purchase it we are going to have a bike ride and invite everyone who has contributed so it will be lovely to see the Sutton family take part.

“Millie will be so pleased.”

Sophie Edwards was diagnosed with a tumour on her spine at the age of 14.

The Ifton Bowling Club member has undergone extensive chemotherapy but doctors have told her family not to plan for Christmas.

Club secretary Terry Williams said: “It all started off with a pain in her back and they thought she had got it in gymnastics.

“Then doctors discovered the tumour. Sophie has been absolutely marvellous. If you could meet her you would never believe that she has just weeks to live.

“It is unbelievable the things that she has been cramming in. She has been having driving lessons and has been shopping at the Trafford Centre in Manchester.

“We want to provide everything we can to make her last months comfortable and enjoyable.

“She is an inspiration to us all and she is breaking our hearts.”

Sophie’s dad Neil added: “I am so unbelievably grateful that the family have decided to give us this money.

“We are doing everything we can to give Sophie what she wants. We are so touched.”

Myra and Graham have vowed to track the progress and stay in touch with the girls.

- Carl’s death was the second tragedy to occur on the same stretch of road in just six days.

Danny Evans, 18, of Connah’s Quay, died when the car he was travelling in overturned near Yew Tree Farm on February 15.
