TWO intrepid students are to embark on a 2,500 mile journey across India in a rickshaw.

Glyndwr University students Matthew Draycott, 26, and Kieran Owens, 18, both of Wrexham, are taking part in the gruelling Winter Rickshaw Run 2011.

A rickshaw has three wheels and the same amount of power as a sit on lawnmower and the event is considered one of the most difficult adventure challenges in the world.

It entails driving over some of the most challenging terrain in the vehicles, which seat a maximum of three and have a maximum engine power of 130cc.

The pair, who have dubbed themselves Team Altitude, are entering the event to raise money for Frankwater – a charity which funds safe drinking water projects in Indian villages.

Matthew and Kieran have been working hard to raise money and have set themselves a big target of £5,000 – which will provide 5,000 people with access to clean water.

They have already reached their first fundraising milestone of £1,000 thanks to kind-hearted donations from friends, families and businesses.

Kieran said: “The response we have received from the residents of Wrexham is truly amazing. It is humbling to see so many people go out of their way to aid
change in the world and improve people’s lives.”

The pair are still determined to keep on working hard to raise more money.

Matthew added: “We still have a long way to go and we need help from local companies and organisations willing to support our adventure in any way they can.”
