DEAN SAUNDERS admitted he will take a cautious approach if he decides to make loan signings.

Although he has spent his allotted budget, Saunders has not ruled out bringing someone in if he is able to juggle his squad around by allowing more Wrexham players to the follow the lead of Marc Williams, Obi Anoruo and Kai Edwards and go out on loan.

In his first season in charge, Saunders dipped into the loan market on a regular basis with a number of players such as Richie de Laet, Joe Allen, Nathan Woolfe, Ryan Flynn and Jon Brown coming in from Premiership and Championship clubs.

Explaining why he is reluctant to sign players who have no experience of lower division football, Saunders said: “As we go along, if I have got any problems I will have the chance to get players.

“I’ve not got any money but we will see what we can do, I might have to let a couple go out to get some in.

“But what I have found since I have been here is that I have spoken to lots of different managers and they say ‘this player will do at that level’.

“But it is a massive step up for players to come and play in the Conference from a Premier League club.

“They think it will be easy but you have got the three games in a week problem for starters. Some can do it, some can’t.

“They train to be Premier League players, not Conference players, and sometimes they have not got the equipment needed to compete at this level.

“I will have to pick the right ones who are the right type for us.”

Saunders is keeping his fingers crossed that his players – particularly centre-backs – steer clear of injury and suspension.

Marvin Andrews pulled up in the warm-up at Newport on Sunday and his place was taken by the fit-again Frank Sinclair who was originally named on the substitutes’ bench.

“I am conscious that we are a bit short of defenders,” said Saunders. “Marvin did his hamstring so I have got to be careful with Frank Sinclair and Chris Blackburn.”

But the Reds boss is pleased with the spirit in the Wrexham squad: “We have got a good spirit in the camp, are playing well and are four games unbeaten,” he said.

“But we have to try and string back-to-back wins together. It felt like we we lost on Sunday because we were in control. But I was proud of how the players battled when we went down to ten men, they played well.”

Meanwhile, Wrexham reserves, who began the defence of their West Division title with two successive victories, are back in action tonight when they host Oldham Athletic at The Airfield (7pm).

Left-back Neil Ashton, sent off in Sunday’s 1-1 draw at Newport, will sit-out Saturday’s visit of York City to The Racecourse through suspension, is eligible to play for the second string.

Goalkeeper Chris Maxwell is set for a run-out despite only featuring for Wales under 21s in Italy yesterday, and as well as giving some first team players a much-needed run-out, Saunders will give youth a chance.

“It will be a young team,” he said. “We have had a lot of games and with having a smaller squad, I only the substitutes and three more players available at Newport on Sunday.

“We have won our two games but most of all I want the younger players to play against men, and learn how to play football.

“In these reserve team games I have asked them to practice certain things.

“It is not always the correct thing to do but we have used the games as training sessions for the younger ones, and for them to represent the club and get used to winning.

“Some need a game and the reserve team is a chance for players to show they want to play for the club. It is a chance to say ‘play me, look what I can do.’ Every day they should be like that in training.”
