RESIDENTS have been given priority for new affordable homes in a village near Wrexham.

Six homes for rent have been built at Heol Glyndwr, Coedpoeth, by Wales & West Housing Association.

There are five three-bedroom houses and a two-bedroom bungalow which has been specially designed for a local disabled tenant.

New tenants had a look round their new homes last week before they move in this month.

The properties were built using a Social Housing Grant of £520,500 which Wrexham Council secured from the Welsh Assembly Government.

The Social Housing Grant is used by registered social landlords to provide affordable housing for rent or low-cost home ownership.

Increasing the number of new affordable homes in the county borough is one of the council’s main priorities over the next two years.

The authority has been exploring ways of increasing the provision of affordable housing and making better use of the Social Housing Grant from the Assembly.

It is now aiming to facilitate 2,205 new affordable homes by 2021.

Cllr Mark Pritchard, the council’s lead member for housing and planning, said: “These homes in Heol Glyndwr are of excellent quality and I am delighted that local people have been given priority.

“The authority has an excellent working relationship with local organisations to provide good quality, affordable homes people who live in the county borough.

“The Heol Glyndwr project is one of a number of affordable housing developments ongoing throughout the county borough which aims to meet Welsh Assembly targets by 2021.

“I would like to thank all the officers, members the planning committee for all their hard work in making this development happen.”
