VANDALS are putting lives in danger by disconnecting a flashing speed indicator a senior councillor has warned.

Flint councillor Alex Aldridge is furious at those responsible for turning off the device on the town’s Halkyn Road.

He is now pleading with the culprits to stop before someone is killed.

“I’m appealing to these bright sparks to please think about what they are doing,” he said.

“This is not a bit of fun it is serious. They need to realise that their actions could potentially be putting lives at risk.”

The sign was installed on the 30mph stretch of road following a high profile campaign from councillors and residents after a serious accident about a year ago when a young man ended up in hospital after being hit by a speeding car.

Since its installation Cllr Aldridge suspects vandals have tampered with the power supply on about four occasions.

Each time engineers from Flintshire Council have to come out to reconnect the sign.

He added: “It’s crucial that the sign stays there because it has been proven that drivers respond very quickly when the light flashes.

“It’s such a fast road and we have had problems there for a long time. Drivers come over the brow of the hill and just accelerate along, but this sign acts as a reminder to drive carefully. There are lots of children in the area either going to the Cornist School or to the high school. It was put there for a reason.”

Council bosses say they are now considering moving the sign.

A Flintshire Council spokesman said: “We are aware of Cllr Aldridge’s concerns and we have agreed to try and relocate the sign to a less vulnerable position on the same stretch of road.”
