Manager Neil Young is confident that Chester will improve on their season opener at Warrington Town.

Chester started life in League One North in superb fashion as they opened the scoring through Rob Hopley after just six minutes, but they were pegged back by the hosts as Gavin Salmon equalised.

Although Chester surged forward in the second half in a vain bid to score the  winner, Blues boss Young and assistant Gary Jones had to settle for a point.

And Young, who handed a starting role to new-signing Tom Field and gave Bradley Barnes and Nick Rogan debuts from the bench, is keen to see patience as he moulds his squad together.

“For me the pleasing thing is that the fans have been able to come here and enjoy themselves. There is a fantastic following but we need to concentrate solely on the football and that is what we are intending to do,” he said.

“People might say ‘why are we still signing players’ but the first batch I brought into the club, and some have already left, were when we were put into the North West Counties.

“When you have no players and players become available you need to get in there and sign them.

“As we got closer to the start date other players became available and we have signed them.

“I think we are as strong as we are going to be, but we still have a lot of work to do.

“We have Andy Burgess who is coming back to fitness, you have Roger Sharrock who came on again, looked lively and has shown what he can do. Peersy (Mark Peers), I said to him that if he did what he did in the second half for the whole game he wouldn’t be playing in this league because, second half, they couldn’t get near him.

“He needs to do that week in, week out though and for longer periods of time.”

Speaking about Field, Barnes and Rogan, Young said he was impressed by what they had to offer, adding: “I thought they did really well. They worked really hard.

“Tom hasn’t played a lot but I thought he was busy on the ball, particularly second half, he got a knock though and we swapped him with Brad, who is a fit young lad.

“He got on the pitch and got about people.

“Nick’s lively. What you need to remember is that these lads have been thrown together and I am still signing players.”

Despite an encouraging start to the season on a tricky surface and against a well-organised Warrington Town outfit, Young has seen plenty of things that need to be worked on.

He was left distinctly unimpressed by some of the defending in the first half and his team’s reluctance to press for a second goal having scored the winner.

“Second half I can’t fault them, “ he said. “In the first half apart from the first 15 or 20 minutes they didn’t do enough. I think they scored and thought it was enough and that we could hold on.

“You don’t come to places like this and hold on, you need to try and get the second and third. Second half though the lads put in a terrific performance.

“Defensively I thought we were a bit all over the place for half an hour after we scored. That is something we will be looking to put right.”

He added: “The grass was quite long here and it was a very bumpy pitch in parts so we didn’t play the flowing football we would have liked to have played. We were back to front too much in the first half for me.

“You have to give credit to Warrington, they had the opportunity to play us first time, they got about us.

“Expectation has gone now. It is just unfortunate with the way the fixtures go that we have to wait until next Monday to play again, but we have to deal with it.”
