YSGOL Maes Garmon has expressed its delight at its A-level results this year.

The Mold school enjoyed a pass rate of more than 97per cent, with grades C and above posted in nearly 70per cent of the exams.

A particularly outstanding performance came from Kate Petty, who will head to Bath University to study Biology. She obtained two A*s in Music and Geography and two As in Biology and Chemistry after studying through the Welsh medium, despite having been born in a totally English family and grown up in Southampton before moving to Caerwys.

Head girl Ceri Roberts, of Mold, gained two A grades and a B and will now go to Aberystwyth to study English Literature and Drama.

Osian Pugh-Jones, of New Brighton, is to study Geography at Aberystwyth University after collecting an A and two Bs, while Sian Owens will also head there to read Drama and Theatre Arts through the Welsh medium after she obtained an A, B and C.

International netball and football player Nia Jones, of Ffrith, was on the ball as collected an A, B and D and will go to University Wales in Cardiff to study Sport and Physical Education.

Other notable performers included Emma Pierce, Hana Owen, Holly Humphreys, Tomos Osian Jones, Bethan Shone, Rhys Williams and Ryan Worrall, who all achieved three passes at C and above including at least one A or B.

Huw Alun Roberts, headteacher, said: “I am very pleased for the students who have worked so hard for their successes. The results are good across the board, with notable successes in the sciences and the arts alike. We are proud that the vast majority have succeeded in getting a place at university in with is a particularly difficult and competitive year.

“We are very pleased that a number of our pupils have gained unconditional places at university following their success in scholarship examinations.”
