THERE have been plenty of stars on show in this year’s A-levels at Alun High School.

The introduction of the new A* grade has paid dividends for the Mold school, with several pupils achieving the coveted results to do both themselves and the school proud.

A year of achievement saw 20 pupils collect at least three A grades in a variety of subjects, with a high number of students going to their first-choice universities.

One noticeable success story was Madalina Aghinitei, of Ruthin, who is bound for Cambridge University to read Engineering after gaining A*s in Maths, Further Maths and Physics and an A in Design Technology.

Also Oxbridge bound is Gareth Roddy, of Lixwm, who will study History at Oxford after achieving an A* in English Literature and History and As in German and Politics.

Thomos Bentley, of Cilcain, will study for Mechanical Engineering at Southampton after achieving A*s in Chemistry and Physics and As in Geography and Maths.

Ruby Tynan, of Denbigh, obtained A*s in Psychology and PE and As in Design Textiles and Sport, as she heads to Loughborough to read Sport.

Lauren Cain, of Queensferry, obtained an A in English Language and A grades in English Literature and Religious Studies. She will now head to York to read English and Linguistics.

Thomas Froggett, of Mold, will study History at Liverpool thanks to his A* in Politics and As in English Literature and History.

Another A* was achieved by Ffion Lloyd, of Mynydd Isa, who achieved the grade in Chemistry and As in Biology and Physics. She will now go to Liverpool to read Veterinary Science.

Nicholas Williams, of Mold, will study Physics at Durham thanks to his A* in Physics and three A grades, while Jana Mainwaring, of Mold, is off to University College London to read French and Philosophy after obtaining an A* in English Literature and two A grades.

David Selwyn, of Cilcain, will read Medicine at Cardiff after obtaining four A grades.

Other successes included Lauren Bagley, Deanne Boden, Zoe Evans, Thomas Grundy, Hannah James, Sophie Kendrick, Michael McKinney, Laura Roberts, Richard Strong and Nia Williams who all collected three A grades.

Ashley Jones, headteacher, said: “I am delighted to report that this set of results has maintained the very high standards we have set in previous years. We have the largest Sixth Form in Wales with over 500 entries, and three-quarters of the grades were C or above.”
