DAVID BROWN insists there will be no room for sentiment when Wrexham take on former club Forest Green Rovers at The New Lawn tonight (7.45pm).

The 31-year-old joined Forest Green in January 2009 and agreed to become player/ assistant-manager for the 2009-10 season.

However, when manager Jim Harvey left the club last August, Brown took over as player/caretaker manager but his short spell in the hotseat ended the following month.

Although he remained on the playing staff, Brown signed for Wrexham earlier this summer and is eager to pick up a victory this evening.

“The Forest Green team has changed massively,” said Brown. “I still speak to the directors but it is a different team, only one or two players are still there.

“I am looking to go there, treat Forest Green as any other team and to take three points. There is no time for sentiment, none at all.

“Every game you want three points, whoever it is. I am at Wrexham now and we have got aims. It is a game we need to be getting three points from.”

Forest Green only avoided relegation last term because Salisbury were demoted for breaching Conference rules and although he enjoyed his spell in the hotseat, Brown was happy to focus solely on playing football once again.

“I was at Forest Green for 18 months and have good memories from playing there, as well as being assistant manager and then caretaker manager,” said Brown.

“I started off as assistant and then the boss, Jim Harvey, got the sack so I took over as manager for a short period.

“Results did not go that well but I enjoyed it. Then a new manager came in and things changed and I was supposed to be assistant but it did not happen.

“I just went back to playing. It was nice to be able to relax and play after the pressure of being manager.

“I was on the bench a few times but I played the majority of the season, around 45 games.”

Wrexham kicked off their new Conference campaign with a 1-0 victory over Cambridge United at The Racecourse on Saturday, and while he believes Wrexham can perform a lot better, Brown was just pleased to have picked up three points.

“It is always nice to start with a win,” he added. “It has set us up nicely for the season.

“The performance was not what we are fully capable of but we had eight of the new signings playing and we need time to gel.

“Winning is all that matters.”

Manager Dean Saunders was delighted with the effort from his players and is looking for Wrexham to continue their winning start to the campaign.

Forest Green were beaten 3-1 at Mansfield Town on the opening day but Saunders won’t take them lightly.

“The effort was outstanding,” said Saunders. “The crowd really got behind the team, it was the best since I have been here.

“We have got three points in the bag and we have got to keep it going.

“But Forest Green will be dangerous opponents. On Friday they did not have a team but put eight players together.

“We won’t be taking them lightly. There is no baggage or lack of confidence at Forest Green. All the players are delighted they have got a club and are playing with a bit of freedom so they are dangerous.

“We are good enough to score goals but concentration will be everything.”

Striker Andy Morrell marked the start of his second spell at Wrexham with what turned out to be the winning goal against Cambridge and Saunders was suitably impressed with the finish.

“What we had last year, all those clean sheets gets you into the top three. Premier League managers were saying you work from there and try and build on that,” said Saunders.

“Andy Morrell took his chance. It was pure anticipation. He gets on the ball before anyone else, you can’t teach that – the goal he scored was down to anticipation.”

And Saunders is wary of playing teams who are happy to allow Wrexham to have the majority of possession: “Sometimes you can have too much of the ball,” he said. “You realise some teams don’t want the ball, they prefer it when you have got it.

“They defend and try and score on the break. The best opportunity for Cambridge to get four men in the box was from a free-kick or a corner.

“When you concede a free-kick, that is the risk you run – all your bad teams to get four or five men into the box. We will be conscious of that.”

Former Rangers centre-back Marvin Andrews, a Trinidad and Tobago international who has joined Wrexham until January, is included in tonight’s squad.

And midfielder Danny Racchi might be involved if he receives clearance after joining on a non-contract, week-to-week basis.
