Neil Young failed to hide his disappointment with Nantwich as Chester thumped an under strength visiting side 5-0.

The clash was Young’s last chance to look at Chester ahead of the season opener against Warrington Town on August 24, but Nantwich brought an inexperienced squad and it showed as the hosts romped to an easy victory.

An excellent performance and goals from Rob Hopley (2), Michael Wilde, Mark Peers and Josh Macauley failed to mask Young’s anger at the final whistle, the ex-Colwyn Bay manager questioning the thinking behind Nantwich’s team selection.

“It was a bit of a disappointment for me from a personal point of view because another team has come here from a higher division, they can say what they want to say, but that is not their first team,” he declared.

“It was probably only two or three out of their first team, they may say they have got a squad but I don’t understand it.

“If they are going to take the game then why because it doesn’t give us a test, it probably gives their younger players an opportunity to play at the Deva Stadium, but it is a bit disappointing because it doesn’t give us the test we require like Wednesday night.

“I can’t say anything against our lads, they went about it in the right manner, we were a bit slow out of the blocks again, could have been a goal down but Richard (Whiteside) made a great save.

“Once we scored it was a little bit too easy, I said to the lads at half time that we have all been in these situations where it can get sloppy. But, if a team is going to come here, for the life of me I don’t understand, you have a game against Chester and surely you send your first team up.

“What do their young lads get from being beaten 5-0? If wasn’t for their ’keeper it would have been nine or 10.

“I have been honest in all my interviews since I have been here and I don’t understand why, that if they they are going to bring youngsters, they don’t let us know.

“It doesn’t really serve us a purpose a week before the season starts.”

Young now has eight days to mould and shape his side ahead of the trip to Warrington and while he was pleased to see Chester win, he admits there are some things to be worked on.

“We have started slowly and that is a concern,” he said. “We have had a chat about it and we have a week now to work on certain things.

“We have a full week of hard week, three sessions of hard work. I can get my point across about what we haven’t done in the last four games.

“There are little things we need to work on. We need to play to our strengths, we are a big physical unit, lets use it.

“We do things a little bit too quick, corners and throw-ins, sometimes although it may not look too pretty we need to get the ball in the box and see where we get.”

Since taking over the reigns at the Deva Stadium Young has had to hastily arrange a squad capable of competing for promotion. and with the season nearing its start Young believes he could be close to finalising his side – providing he can secure another striker.

Former Vauxhall Motors man Josh Macauley impressed as a sub against Nantwich, but Young explained that the player has other irons in the fire.

“We have made an offer to Josh and he has other offers on the table,” he said. “I think he would like to come but I need to have a chat with him and see where we are at.

“We have got one or two more options up front, we are pretty close to a loan signing from the Conference and another loan or possible signing out of the Conference so there are things happening.

“I was talking late last night with a manager and hopefully we can have that sorted on Monday and the other we will look at on Wednesday.”
