AN engagement ring has made a return to the very shop it was originally bought from – 68 years later.

The ring made a reappearance at Martin Rees Jewellers on Chester Street, Wrexham to be resized to fit the fiancée of the original owner’s grandson.

The engagement ring has a long history of bringing luck and happiness, having been bought by the late Stanley Evans for his fiancée Gladys.

Married in July 1942 at Brymbo parish church, Stanley and Gladys were together for almost 40 years until Stanley died in 1982.

Gladys kept the ring until her death and it was handed on to grandson John Roberts, 29, in February this year.

John proposed to girlfriend Rebecca Masters on her 29th birthday.

Rebecca said: “I kind of knew it was coming.

“We have been together for about three years.

“I’m looking forward to planning the wedding but we are expecting a baby in October so it will have to be after that. We’d like a church wedding.”

Ruth Rees from the jewellers, who resized the ring at no cost, said: “I was really touched that they brought the ring back home to be altered after so many years.

“When Stanley bought the ring in 1942 the jewellers was owned and run by Arthur Francis.

“Albert Mawdsley then took over in 1945 with it becoming Martin Rees Jewellers in 1985.

“This little gold symbol of one person's commitment to another has been given a new shine and leaves the shop a second time beginning a new journey to share a lifetime with a new young couple in love.”
