YOUNG musicians will be able to show off their skills in competition when a folk festival returns for its second year.

Tegeingl – the Festival of Hidden Folk – will be held at Mold Rugby Club from August 20 to August 22.

Performers under the age of 25 can compete for the title of Best Young Musician and a £100 prize donated by Cymdeithas Wil Bryan Society.

Folk groups of any age, style or size can try for the Best Folk Group trophy and a £200 prize courtesy of Mold town council.

Musicians and singers who do not want to compete will be able to join in with informal instrumental and singalong sessions throughout the weekend.

Last year’s inaugural festival was hailed a success and it is hoped this second year will build on its efforts to keep traditional music alive.

Festival chairman Bryn Davies said: “There is a tremendous resurgence of interest in traditional music, dance and poetry in and around North Wales, especially among the younger generation.

“Tegeingl will provide local musicians, of all ages, with a fantastic opportunity to compete and perform on the same stage as international stars. While we hope to uncover a hotbed of local talent, we also believe everyone will benefit greatly from being surrounded with music, tales and dances from other cultures as well as our own.”

Mold mayor Cllr Chris Bithell said: “We are really pleased to be able to support Tegeingl Festival again. It’s great to see community-led events grow into annual fixtures in Mold’s cultural calendar.

“We are very much looking forward to welcoming Tegeingl festival’s visitors to Mold town.”
