THREE of the county’s most neglected areas will find out today if they will split £250,000 of regeneration cash.

Connah’s Quay, Shotton and Queensferry are in line for a cash windfall if Flintshire Council’s executive agrees the proposals at a County Hall meeting.

Parts of the towns could be transformed and traffic congestion eased, according to those behind the plans.

A range of projects including a revamp of Queensferry’s War Memorial Institute, improving the festival gardens site and area behind Church Street, Connah’s Quay and installing parking bays and landscaping work on Alexandra Street and Terrig Street in Shotton could now take place.

Calls have been made by community leaders to say yes to the report.

Connah’s Quay councillor Bernie Attridge said: “I hope the right decision is made. It is going to provide a massive boost for Deeside.”

A report to the executive by the council’s head of housing Clare Budden recommends the proposals be given the green light.

The grant is part of a £1.2 million boost for Deeside - £900,000 of which was funded by the Welsh Assembly Government and £300,000 of which was match funded by Flintshire Council.

The rest of the money will eventually be spent on improved health, energy efficiency and neighbourhood environmental improvements.

The money is to be spilt evenly across the three towns.

Shotton county councillor Ron Davies said he hoped the funding would be approved and said extra parking would help traffic on Terrig Street.

He said: “It is a real problem. It makes it impassable with so many cars parked on the road. Any improvement in the environment is a benefit to everyone.”

Cllr Attridge said he hoped the funding could lead to further improvements in the area and that Deeside could attract more funding in the coming years.

He said: “The hope is over the next 10 years we could attract £10m of funding. That is the sort of money other places get. It is not guaranteed but this could be part of that.

It can be a catalyst to other things, other grant monies and all sorts of things.”
