A COUPLE’S wedding plans have suffered a setback after the bakery supplying their cake suddenly closed down.

James Meason, 30, is planning to tie the knot with 21-year-old Megan Denton at Capel-y-Groes in Wrexham on August 21.

They thought they had settled the issue of the cake when they say they paid more than £350 for a three-tier chocolate delight from Wrexham-based Ecclestons.

However, last week the 112-year-old firm made the shock announcement of its immediate closure.

Staff were made redundant as eight shops across the region and its bakery in Coedpoeth shut.

Sole owner David Eccleston, of Wrexham, said he had decided to call time on the business as he approached his 73rd birthday, adding there was no one in the family to take it over.

Mr Meason, who works for a local charity, and his bride-to-be, a nursery worker, ordered their cake at a wedding fair in February at Parkhall, near where they were both living at the time in Weston Rhyn.

Mr Meason, who now lives in Ponciau, said: “Ecclestons had a special offer on for that day only which meant we were able to get 20 per cent off the price of the cake.

“We ordered a three-tier one, made of chocolate and with chocolate icing and trimmings, and paid them £225 there and then.

“We later visited the bakery at Coedpoeth and paid an extra £125 for a different type of cake they had not done before.

“We need quite a big cake because we are expecting 150 guests at the reception, which will be at Brymbo Cricket Club.

“A couple of weeks ago Ecclestons sent us an invoice for another £25 and there was no mention then of them closing down before our cake was delivered.”

He added: “Earlier this week I saw that the company had closed all its shops and the bakery.

“I have not been able to contact them to ask them about the cake but it now looks as if we won’t get it.

“I am pretty annoyed that they have not told me anything.

“As for a wedding cake, we will now have to look to our friends to try and do something.”

The Leader has not been able to contact Mr Eccleston for a response.

Wrexham Trading Standards say, however, they expect the situation will be resolved amicably.

However, a spokeswoman said: “If Mr Meason does encounter any difficulties, he should write to the company requesting either the cake to be available or a refund.

“If anybody is having any similar difficulties, they should contact Consumer Direct in the first instance.”
