A PUB has been named the best in Wales for food.

We Three Loggerheads pub in Gwernymynydd was recognised by trade magazine The Morning Advertiser in its annual Best British Pub competition.

As well as the Best Food Pub title, it also won the title of the Best Freehouse in Wales.

Delighted landlady Lynda Wyatt told the Leader: “We were really encouraged when we heard we had won. The Best Freehouse award means a lot to us because we really support our local suppliers.

“Our milk, our bread and our meat is all local and it’s really nice to encompass them under one roof.”

Lynda and husband Paul will attend a ceremony in London next month to accept their awards.

Meanwhile, the Raven in Llanarmon-yn-Ial, which was brought back from the brink of closure by residents who took it over, has been recognised by the Scouts, who have given it a special Community Challenge badge for setting a good example.

The award was presented as part of the annual Scout birthday awards.

David Morris, from Clwyd Scouts said: “Llanarmon-yn-Ial prides itself that it is one of the few remaining villages that has a shop, post office, school and pub.

“A lot of effort has gone into the pub, the same kind of effort it takes to run a Scout group. They are setting a good example for local Scouts. We are proud to give them the badge.”

The pub is now run by a team of volunteers with only the chef and local schoolchildren who help out on weekends getting paid for their work.

Lewis Farnley, a committee member at the pub, said they were pleased with the award.

He said: “A lot of people out there have tried to do this with a pub and it has not worked. It can be done and it is nice when people appreciate that.”

The Raven Inn will be celebrating its first birthday over August Bank Holiday weekend with a number of events.
