A WEEK-long programme of events next month aims to thrust one of the world’s greatest heritage sites into the spotlight.

The free activities are being planned to mark Pontcysyllte Aqueduct and Canal’s World Heritage Status which was granted last year.

A high-profile event was staged at the time to mark the occasion and this year’s event is again being organised by the events team in Wrexham Council’s economic development department.

The week-long programme of events kicks off on Monday, September 20 with a series of guided walks, talks and coach tours, topped by a family day out at Trevor Basin on Saturday, September 25.

Cllr Bob Dutton, deputy leader of the council with responsibility for the site, said: “Plans for the World Heritage Week are well under way and we’re looking forward to following up the success of previous events.

“As well as offering people the chance to celebrate and learn more about the World Heritage Site, the week of events will also help raise its profile, attract visitors to the county and support the local tourism economy.”
