A WOMAN has died after being hit by a train.

Rush-hour commuters from across the region were disrupted after the incident on the line at Saltney Junction yesterday.

Emergency services rushed to Saltney Junction at about 5.30am.

British Transport Police were called to the scene after a train driver reported seeing a person close to the tracks.

The woman was subsequently struck and killed by the 5.45am Chester to Wrexham service.

The victim, who has not yet been identified, received multiple injuries and was pronounced dead by paramedics at the scene.

A British Transport Police spokesman said the circumstances surrounding the woman’s death were still “unexplained”.

He said: “The incident is currently being treated as non-suspicious and an investigation to determine the full circumstances is ongoing.

“Officers are currently working to establish the woman’s identity and inform her family."

An inquest into the woman’s death is expected to be opened later this week.

Arriva Trains Wales services were cancelled for two hours from about 6am and commuters faced long delays, with the line reopening at 8.30am.

Further disruption was experienced throughout the day, due to the knock-on effect of the earlier changes.
