VANDALS left a trail of destruction at the site of a community garden.

A spate of attacks has centred on the gazebo at Greenfield community garden.

At one stage the village residents’ association considered removing it in the face of the persistent attacks.

The popular structure has been damaged several times already, less than two months after the garden on School Lane was opened.

Greenfield councillor Rosetta Dolphin said volunteers, including schoolchildren, had worked tirelessly to help maintain the garden.

Speaking about the most recent attack, she said: “It is stupidity. They are wrecking it. It is really disappointing. They have really had a go at it this time.

“A lot of the kids are really good, it is just one or two. This is not the young ones, as it is happening in the middle of the night. It is young adults, they should know better.”

Greenfield Tenants’ and Residents’ Association has worked tirelessly to create the garden with volunteers helping to repair the gazebo.

Cllr Dolphin said: “A lot of money has been spent on the garden. The idea was if it was raining people could sit inside it.

“All these things were considered. It was for all ages to use, from older people to younger people.

“The community was really excited about it, it was something that was done for them. It is so disappointing that these few are going to ruin it for everybody.”

Children from Greenfield school have also been helping by planting flowers at the site.

Police sergeant John Williams said: “We are aware of the gardens. It is something that the community has worked quite hard to get.

“We are not getting reports of damage. I would like to ask any members of the public with information to come forward. If there are any reports then we will respond to that positively.”
