PONTBLYDDYN will host a charity cricket match between the Legends of Rugby Union and the Legends of Rugby League on July 25, (2.30pm start).

The two teams will be renewing their rivalry and locking horns in the non-stop action Twenty/Twenty form of the game.

The players confirmed so far are current and former league players – Andy Gregory, Jason Critchley, Abi Ekoku, Andy Northey, Dave Lyon, Lee Briers, Michael Monaghan and Steve Hampson.

The Union team will include Tim Stimpson, Simon Halliday, Steve Hanley, Jonathan Griffiths and may also feature Welsh legend Gareth Thomas along with
the Paul brothers, Robbie and Henry.

The fun-packed family day will include a local derby in the NE Wales Under 9 League, starting at 11am between Pontblyddyn and Brymbo, a barbecue, various stalls and a showpiece performance from local National Champions, Buckley
Starlets Cheerleading squad.

The Wooden Spoon is the children’s charity of British Rugby and has raised over £15 million for disadvantaged children in its 26 year history. Last year the event raised over £10,000 and it is hoped that this year will exceed this figure and raised money for Flintshire projects.

The event is being spearheaded by Richard Greenwood, a former England captain and coach.

He said: “This is the third contest in the Legends’ Challenge Series – Union won the inaugural Twenty/Twenty match last year and a couple of weeks ago League triumphed in the ‘Ryder Cup of Rugby Golf’ on a spectacularly successful day at Royal Birkdale, so there is everything to play for at Pontblyddyn.

“The 2009 game was an absolute cracker and produced a very high standard of cricket.

“We are hoping for another big crowd because last year was a great success.”

Tickets are priced at £10 for adults, £5 for pensioners and children, £20 for family entry (two adults and all the children) and play starts at 2.30pm,

Limited hospitality places are available at the Bridge Inn, including champagne reception, lunch, access to the Players’/VIP area and afternoon tea.
