A MOTHER who launched a zero-tolerance campaign against drink-driving after her son’s death says she is heartbroken by the negative response in some quarters.

David ‘Dewi’ Foulkes, 23, from Mancot, died in a car crash on Glynne Way, Hawarden, in August last year.

Friend and driver Martin Bielicky was jailed for six years for causing his death by dangerous driving while three times over the drink-drive limit.

More than 1,000 people have signed a petition set up by David's mother Lynne, 50, demanding that the drink-drive limit is slashed to nil.

But the bereaved mum, who has canvassed the streets to get signatures, said not everyone was supporting her.

She told the Leader: “People have slammed the door in my face and it’s really upsetting.

“I do it in a nice way. I knock on the door and say I’m sorry to bother them. I tell them about how I lost my David and ask what their views are on the current law. But they are just not interested.

“It seems to be the older people who disagree. They like to have a pint or two after work and say they won’t be able to do that if the limit is cut.

“Other people say the pubs would close down if they couldn’t have a couple of drinks and drive home.

“I feel hurt because it is people’s feelings on the line. They haven’t lost someone in the circumstances I have.

“But I’m determined to carry on. If it saves just one person’s life I will do it.”

Lynne has found solace in an unlikely group of supporters.

She said: “I went to a football tournament where a group of lads with drink-drive convictions were happy to sign the petition.

“They said if they had known what the consequences were before they got behind the wheel, they would never have done it.”

She added: “There needs to be a clear message."

Lynne’s campaign was launched as ministers were urged to cut the drink-drive limit by nearly half in a government commissioned report.

Sir Peter North’s review said reducing the limit from 80mg of alcohol per 100ml of blood to 50mg would save hundreds of lives.

Lynne, who will take the petition to Downing Street, is meeting Alyn and Deeside MP Mark Tami later this month to discuss her campaign.
