A PRIMARY school’s cooking skills have been given the thumbs-up by celebrity chef Jamie Oliver.

St Mary’s Catholic Primary in Wrexham triumphed in their category at the Active Kids Get Cooking 2010 Awards ceremony held in London.

The programme is run by Sainsbury’s to support and promote healthy eating and cooking in early years settings throughout the UK.

The theme of this year’s primary competition was to create recipes for a sustainable spread and St Mary’s beat schools from all over the UK to win the award.

The school also triumphed in the Wales category.

Pupils from years three and four wowed Jamie Oliver and the other judges with their Welsh feast of River Dee fishcakes and Welsh mini muffins.

Pupils from years five and six also entered the competition.

The school decided to create their Welsh feast for visitors from Raciborz in Poland, which is twinned with Wrexham, and were here earlier this year.

All the food for the project was sourced locally and pupils’ families were allowed to get involved.

Meat was supplied for local butchers; eggs were supplied from hens kept by parents and even the fish was caught by a parent in the River Dee.

St Mary’s headteacher Kathy Jones said: “Everyone at the school is delighted to win this award.

“This was a project that involved the local community, so I would like to thank everyone involved for their efforts.

“The pupils worked very hard on this project, creating a feast that was not only sustainable and locally sourced, but really tasty as well.”

St Mary’s received £500 as part of their prize, which will be used to buy cooking equipment as well as taking out the pupils for a celebratory meal.
