THE mum of a young girl killed in a tragic accident says raising money in her memory is keeping the family going.

Thousands of pounds have been raised for the Emily May Hughes Fund and put back into the community of Coedpoeth where she lived.

At the weekend a fundraising day at the Golden Lion in Coedpoeth raised £1,300 for the fund, a valuable addition to what has already been raised, according to Emily May's mum Louise Hughes.

Louise, who is now a PCSO in Hightown, said of the fundraising: “It does help. It helps us because we are giving the community something back.

“It’s still very raw but it just keeps us going by giving something back to the community who were a great help at the time.”

The village was left deeply shocked when the four-year-old died after a television set being carried by her father fell on her on Christmas Eve 2008.

Emily May would have been six on May 8.

Louise said her children Ross, 11, Lucy, nine and Betty, eight, still talk about Emily May every day and love to get involved in the fundraising efforts.

Louise added: “You have just got to keep going."

Among other projects the fund has sponsored a new education centre at Nant Mill and a new handprint tree which all the community are invited to get involved with in
August.

Other valuable projects have included making bird boxes and feeders for local schoolchildren while a massive £6,000 was raised for Ronald McDonald House at Alder Hey Children’s Hospital.
