BIG-HEARTED staff at a Wrexham coffee shop have stepped in to help repair a children’s play area that has been ravaged by rabbits.

The plot at Wrexham Maelor Hospital’s Child Health Centre is currently out of bounds because bunnies have been burrowing beneath it.

Now, staff at the Starbucks café in Eagles Meadow shopping centre are aiming to raise more than £500 to pay for the play area to be repaved and to buy more play equipment.

Starbucks manager Kevin McCann said: “The Child Health Centre has an outside play area which sadly at the moment is out of bounds.

“The problem is it is half paved and half grass.

“Rabbits have dug holes and made the ground unsafe for the children to use.

“We want to raise more than a £500 to help the centre and turn the area into somewhere the children can use as a play area.

“The idea is to have it fully paved, which would cost around £500 and any extra money we raise can be used for play equipment.”

Nurse Sue Nelson, who works at the centre, said: “It’s great news and Starbucks have been very good to us by taking our needs on board as a community project.

“Even though we have had glorious weather recently we have been unable to let the children play outside.

“We have children from both Wrexham and Flintshire who attend the centre for therapy and help with problems from delayed development to speech and language problems and from feeding issues to behavioural concerns. We are not a diagnostic centre but we do work closely with our medical colleagues.”
