JOBS at an aerospace component maker near Wrexham have been secured thanks to a £40m deal.

Magellan Aerospace (UK) which has a site at Rackery Lane, Llay and one at Bournemouth, has won a deal with Airbus to create parts for the new A350 airliner.

Magellan, which employs 320 people at Llay, will make a number of complex machined aluminium detail components which is expected to generate more than
£40m over the next 10 years.

Commercial director Haydn Martin said the company was hoping to assemble the components at the Llay plant with the actual production being carried out in Bournemouth.

Mr Martin said: “This programme does not generate any significant revenue in the next two to three years but will ramp up as the A350 programme increases in 2014-2015.

“Whilst this project does not generate any significant new jobs in the short term it will certainly secure some jobs in the future as some of the older programmes that we are working on decline.”

In September last year Magellan announced that 46 jobs could go at the Llay factory and 20 at the Bournemouth branch.

Wrexham Council leader Aled Roberts said: “It’s obviously good news given the uncertainty reported by the company some time back.

“Any certainty provided by any company in the area is to be welcomed.

“We have already identified in the council that we need to ensure these companies in the area are given support.

“The council welcomes this news.”

In April Magellan signed a deal to provide parts for the Airbus A380 superjumbo and was also chosen to carry out work on the A350 centre wing box.
