POLICE evacuated 20 homes in Acton in the early hours of the morning while they dealt with an incident at a house.

Officers were called to the house in Chestnut Avenue just after 1.20am yesterday to investigate reports of a gas leak.

They then set up a 50-metre cordon around the property involved.

Occupants of 20 houses in the avenue and nearby Central Avenue, which were within the cordon, were then evacuated for an hour.

The area returned to normal a few hours afterwards.

Police say one man was arrested during the incident and is helping officers with their enquiries.

They also thanked local people for their patience during the incident.

A spokesman for North Wales Police said: “A man is currently in custody waiting to be interviewed following a domestic incident in Chestnut Avenue, Wrexham.

“The area had been cordoned off during the incident to keep local residents safe as there were reports of a gas leak at the scene.”

One of the residents evacuated, who did not want to be named, said: “I was in bed when there was a knock at the door at about 1.40am.

“It was the police and they said there was a gas leak in the area.

“The officers said they didn’t want to alarm us but we would have to leave our houses while it was sorted out.

“I believe quite a few people from Chestnut Avenue and Central Avenue were told the same thing.

“We all went out and stood on the green at the end of the avenue.

“We were there for about an hour and I eventually got back to bed about 3.30am.

“I’m feeling a bit tired this morning.

The resident added: “It was a bit of excitement but not the sort of thing you want at that time of the morning.”
