A PUB could soon be bulldozed and replaced with houses.

The Carlton Club on King George Street, Shotton could have nine private homes in its place if a planning application to Flintshire Council is successful.

Outline planning permission to change its use from commercial to residential was granted in November last year.

A further application to allow for the building of houses was submitted in May.
Community leaders are backing the bid because they say not enough people are using the club.

Shotton West councillor Ann Minshull told the Leader: “I have got no problem with it closing at all.

“It’s not making any money because nobody ever goes there. It makes no financial sense to keep it open. I have also had complaints from people living nearby about the loud music and the drunks.

“Houses will be more in-keeping with the area. It is a prime residential area and it will be nice private housing.

“When Wetherspoons opens in August I imagine it will stand no chance.”

But town councillor Elwyn Jones is fighting for it to stay open. “It will be a great loss to the community,” he said.

“It is a good asset because it has function rooms and I was hoping it would carry on.

“You can’t just have a town with houses and no leisure facilities. You may complain about the noise coming from the club now, but imagine the danger that extra traffic and people would bring if houses are built, especially to the nearby infants school.

“I would like to see the club retained.”

Cllr Jones was denied listed building consent when he applied to Welsh heritage service, Cadw.

Built in 1911, the club began life as The Conservative Club before changing its name.

Residents have until Thursday, July 1 to make objections to the proposals.
