CAERWYS 1
CLAWDDNEWYDD 4

ON paper, this looked likely to be an away banker.

Clawddnewydd have lost just once on their travels all season, while Caerwys have won only one game on home soil in 2010.

However, the points were in the balance until late in the second half, when Mark Lewis’ title chasers finally gained control.

As the visitors began the match with only 10 players, Caerwys were probably the better side in the opening 45 minutes.

They took the lead when 15-year-old Owen Trainer slotted home his first senior goal for the club from 10 yards out.

Clawddnewydd were bolstered with the late addition of Llion Jones in the line-up and the defending champions benefited from an own goal to draw level before the break.

Arwyn Davies flicked the ball back, but it cleared goalkeeper Gareth Williams and nestled into the net.

The second half saw Clawddnewydd having the better of things, but Caerwys went close to regaining the lead when Geraint Jones’ deflected shot forced keeper Ian Davies into a brilliant save.

At the other end Rob Lewis’ goal gave Clawdd the lead for the first time and they had some breathing space when Mark Lewis bagged his sixth of the season.

The fourth goal - scored by Llion Jones - sealed it for the away side.

Joint-Caerwys boss John Owens said: “I think, probably, for a lot of the second half Clawdd saw more of the possession but they didn’t have that many chances.

“I felt again we deserved something out of the game.”

Caerwys star men were striker Rich Mike Jones and midfielder Alexander Wallace.
