POLICE in Wrexham have launched an operation to combat party drug Mephedrone.

Caia Park community beat manager Miles Hanmer said the drug, which has recently been classed as illegal, has now increased “quite a bit” in the town.

As part of Operation Quack to tackle Mephedrone also known as MCAT, officers raided a house in the Smithfield area and uncovered a quantity of suspected class B drug.

The drug has been sent away for testing and nobody has yet been arrested in relation to the warrant.

PC Hanmer said: “MCAT in the town has increased quite a bit and the Maelor Hospital has reported a few people coming in suffering the effects of it.

“MCAT is potentially fatal and people do not know what they are taking.

“It is a man-made substance and people do not understand the strength and quantities of it yet.

“Now that it is illegal it will make it easier for us to tackle the problem. People are being stopped in the town centre or spotted on CCTV for suspected drug use.

“MCAT is the new recreational drug.”
