RAF aerobatic team the Red Arrows will take to the skies during a three-day music festival to raise money for two children’s hospices.

Gwyl Gobaith 2010, which is being supported by a host of music stars, takes place in the rural setting of the Deeside College campus in Northop from Friday, June 25 to Sunday, June 27.

The festival is in aid of the main children’s hospices serving North Wales – the long-established Hope House near Oswestry and Ty Gobaith in the Conwy Valley.

College gates will open at 4.30pm on the Friday and Saturday, but on Sunday concert-goers will be able to get in at 3pm to make sure they see the high-flying Arrows.

Festival co-ordinator Eleanor Roberts said: “The Red Arrows will be overhead at 3.30pm so it is important anyone interested in seeing them gets to Northop especially early on the Sunday.

“Getting the Red Arrows to make an appearance is something of a coup and we want as many people as possible to get to the ground early enough to enjoy the display.”

The actual concerts are scheduled to start at 7.30pm on the Friday and Saturday, and 8pm on Sunday.

Eleanor said: “What we’re hoping is that people will get in the swing of things and take advantage of the rural setting by coming along early enough to enjoy a picnic.

“We have hampers available to order and we’re using local suppliers because this is all about the community pulling together in support of a very worthwhile cause.

“At the end of the day it is the hospices and the services they offer which really matter. We want everyone to have fun, enjoy the performances and help maximise the amount that is raised for charity.”

Among those providing pre-concert entertainment will be Northop Silver Band, Ewloe Green Primary School, Ysgol Glan Clwyd from St Asaph, Point of Ayr Colliery Band, and Ysgol Glanrafon.

Each day of the festival has a different theme, with the Friday being devoted to choirs in the park. Performing will be the London Community Gospel Choir, Fron Male Voice Choir, 2009 National Eisteddfod winners Maelgwyn Male Voice Choir, Last Choir Standing runners-up Cor Ysgol Glanaethwy, mezzo-soprano Ann Atkinson, and Piantel with harpist Dylan Cernyw and pianist Annette Bryn Parri.

Musicals in the park is the theme on Saturday, with a bill featuring West End sensation Peter Karrie, Ashley Oliver direct from Beauty and the Beast, Jay Alexander and the Westenders, Cor Ysgol Glanaethwy, the John Quirk Band, and Piantel.

The Sunday is devoted to classics in the park with the star-studded line-up including tenor Rhys Meirion, soprano Shan Cothi, baritone David Kempster, world famous pianist Llyr Williams, the London International Orchestra, the Corps of Drums of the Royal Welsh, and Piantel.

Welcoming the musical feast, Rhys Meirion said: “I am delighted that the community has embraced this new festival. It will be a weekend to remember.”

Each of the three performances will end with a spectacular fireworks display.
