PUPILS are looking forward to playing football on their school field for the first time in 12 years.
The field at Hafod Y Wern Primary School, Caia Park, has not been suitable for use as a football pitch because a problem with drainage led to big holes in the surface.
But thanks to workers from Bangor-on-Dee racecourse, who ploughed and rotivated the field and donated seeds to help grass grow back, the beautiful game could now be back on the agenda by September or October.
The children are at present able to use other sections of the field but because of the holes, there has not been a section big enough to form a football pitch.
Headteacher Simon Edwards called in a favour from friends who work at the Racecourse and said he was hugely grateful.
“We haven’t had a football match for 12 years,” he said.
“We had massive problems with the drains which left holes 6ft by 2ft.
Speaking about what his friends had done, Mr Edwards said: “They have been here three or four times to plough, rotivate, roll and use the seeding machine and have charged us a lot less than normal.
“The seeds have been donated for free from the racecourse.
“The kids are thrilled to bits about it,” Mr Edwards added. “They can’t wait to see it.”
