A TALENTED rugby player who died after a night out is to be remembered in a charity sporting event.

Paul Hopkins, 23, from Mancot, suffered a seizure after he collapsed in Brannigan’s nightclub, Foregate Street, Chester, in March last year.

He was rushed to the Countess of Chester Hospital, where he later died.

The Mold Rugby Club player will be honoured at a tournament where friends and family will take to the pitch in his memory.

Organiser and assistant coach Mike Roberts told the Leader: “We just wanted to remember Paul and have a good laugh at the same time.

“It will be touch rugby, which is completely different, and something that everyone can get involved in.

“It is a ‘no contact’ game, where the ball can only go backwards.

“It is easy and good fun and there will be a relaxed atmosphere.

“It is what Paul would have wanted.”

It is the second time the tournament has been played in Paul’s memory.

Last year 12 teams pulled together to raise £1,700 for the British Heart Foundation which will also benefit from this year’s event.

Supporting on the day will be Paul’s mother, Christine, sister Claire and brothers Richard, David and Mark.

“His family are really pleased that it’s going ahead again,” added Mike.

“I’m really good friends with his brother Richard, who will be flying in from Germany for the occasion.

Even Paul’s sister, Claire, has her own female team, called The Firebirds, who can’t wait to take part again.

“We’re hoping for a big turnout.”

The tournament will take place on Saturday, July 24 at Mold Rugby Club where all games will be played over two five-minute halfs.

Entry is free but donations will be collected throughout the day.

In the evening there will be a live band and disco at the club. Admission will cost £5.
