A FURIOUS councillor has blasted Cardiff law makers over the state of the county’s roads.

Cllr Sharps, executive member for environment, has hit out at the Welsh Assembly Government for not allocating funding for pothole repairs in Flintshire quickly enough.

Central government announced in its 2010 budget an additional £100m funding for local authorities to repair the damage to their highways – £18 million of this was due to be split between the devolved governments in Wales and Scotland.

To date the Welsh Assembly Government has still not allocated its share of the additional funding.

Cllr Sharps said: “I am bitterly disappointed that the Assembly has not recognised the urgent need to help local authorities so that there is parity with England.

“It now appears that the pothole funding has been lumped together with other additional funds.

“There is now £47m to be allocated for the Assembly’s priorities and pressures.

The pothole money may not be used as central government intended.

“The problem exists now and we cannot wait until the summer for our share.”

Following the worst winter weather for 30 years the county’s highway network have suffered serious structural damage.

Since January more than 5,300 potholes have been reported.
