THE former chief executive of Wrexham FC and Crusaders is being investigated by police in relation to alleged financial irregularities, the Leader can reveal.

Paul Retout has been questioned by the Metropolitan Police after allegations were made by a London company.

But Mr Retout has vigorously defended himself, saying: “I can confirm that I am involved in an acrimonious legal dispute with a business I was previously a partner in. I can also confirm that no charges have been brought against me, and my lawyers will vigorously pursue any instance of slander, libel, or defamation of character if deemed necessary.”

The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) in London said: "I can confirm that CPS London has received a file on Paul Retout in relation to alleged financial irregularities.

"I can also confirm that we have advised the police to undertake further enquiries and that no decision has yet been made on whether or not to prosecute."

A Metropolitan Police spokesman said: “I can confirm officers from Southwark CID are investigating an allegation of fraud.

The allegation was reported to police in September 2009.

“A man in his 40s has been arrested in connection with the allegation and has been bailed to return on a date in August to a south London police station pending further enquiries. The allegation was made by a company based in London

“The investigation is ongoing and enquiries continue. A file was submitted to the CPS for consideration in March.”

Mr Retout announced he was stepping down from his role at the club on a sixth-month sabbatical on May 28 for “personal reasons” and to rest after two years of work at The Racecourse.

Wrexham FC chairman Ian Roberts said Mr Retout, a Ruthin-based chartered accountant was “not currently with the club” after having stepped down as chief executive.

He confirmed though that he was still a director but that a review was being conducted into the situation.

Speaking after stepping down as chief executive last month Mr Retout, who arrived at the Racecourse in July 2008 said he intended to return to the club after his break.

He said he planned to travel to Australia on a factfinding mission to learn how NRL (National Rugby League) teams operate.
