A DRINK-driver has been jailed after crashing into the rear of a car on the A483 and then driving off.

David Elwyn Richards, of Heol Kenyon, Johnstown, was described as driving his Ford Transit van “all over the road” on the dual carriageway near Rossett on May 18.

Wrexham Magistrates’ Court was told Richards, 40, then hit the rear of a car being driven by Sabrina Lloyd.

Justin Espie, prosecuting, said Miss Lloyd’s car was pushed into the central barrier.

Mr Espie said Richards then drove away from the scene but was followed to Llay and then to the Gresford roundabout by a witness.

His van then broke down off the roundabout on a slip-road to the A483 and police found him hiding nearby.

Richards admitted driving with 124mg of alcohol in 100ml of breath, failing to stop after an accident and failing to report an accident to police within 24 hours.

He also admitted driving without insurance and otherwise than in accordance with his licence because he was a disqualified driver.

Henry Hills, defending, said: “Richards had been working in Chester and the scheduled driver of the works van was off sick.

“Richards was anxious not to lose work.

“He had driven to Chester and before finishing work had consumed vodka.

Mr Hills added: “His attitude is one of regret and he says he doesn’t care if he doesn’t drive again.”

District Judge Andrew Shaw sentenced Richards to four months in prison for driving with excess alcohol with a month's sentence for failing to stop and failing to report the accident, to run concurrently.

Richards was also disqualified from driving for four years but told he could take part in a drink-driver’s rehabilitation course to reduce the ban.
