THE family of a popular teenager killed in a crash have beaten their memorial fundraising target.

Danny Evans, of Connah’s Quay, died when the car he was travelling in overturned on Sealand Road in February. The 18-year-old Welsh champion high jumper had been on his way to a night out in Chester with friends.

After the tragedy Danny’s parents Mark and Debbie, brother Lee and sister Sophie began fundraising in his memory in aid of Deeside Athletics Club, of which Danny was a member.

They have organised several events, including a football match and a charity night at the Navy Club in Connah’s Quay alongside former Everton defender Ian Snodin and entertainer John Styles.

Debbie said: “Our aim was to raise £4,000 for a new high jumping mat for the club but we have raised about £6,500 so far.

“It was absolutely amazing. We couldn’t believe how many people turned up and donated.”

The family is now preparing for the Danny Evans Memorial Games, which will be held at Deeside College this Sunday.

They are hoping the atheltics event, which is drawing young competitiors from across the country, will become an annual event.

Debbie said: “It is unbelievable that we have raised so much so quickly.

“I’ve asked the club to look at buying a cover for the mat now too, as it is going to be outdoors all year round and we’re planning on donating the rest of the money to the little kids at the club.

“I think we’ll be able to smash £7,000 soon. The fundraising is what is keeping me going at the moment – it gives me something to get up for in the morning.”
