AN ELDERLY couple are warning people to be on their guard after being targeted by a mail scam.

Cliff and Margret Platts, of Bryn y Baal, near Mold, say they have been plagued with letters claiming they have won laptops and huge cash prizes.

Cliff, 80, said his 83-year-old wife was often the prime target for the scammers.

He added: “They are constantly dropping through the door, saying Margret has won thousands of pounds – which she needs to claim by calling a premium rate number and ‘placing an order’.

“We have just ignored all of them, but they still keep flooding in, even though I wrote a letter back to the company who sent them asking them to stop contacting us.

“We just want to warn other people of the dangers. Some people might get things like this through the door and think it is real.”

South Flintshire police inspector Martin Best is urging householders to make sure they seek advice about any suspect mail.

He said: “There is a process that can be put in place through post offices that can prevent this type of mail from being delivered to a specific address. I would encourage householders to find out more about this process if they are having problems and to ensure they seek advice about anything suspicious from Trading Standards or North Wales Police.”

To report an incident, call North Wales Police on 0845 607 1002.
