A MAN has suffered burns to his face following an accident at a chemical factory in Wrexham.

Fire crews were called to the Cytec Engineering Material Units, on Abenbury Way on the Wrexham Industrial Estate, at about 10pm on Friday to deal with a chemical incident where a man was hospitalised with chemical burns.

Four crews from Wrexham as well as the specialist incident response unit based at Deeside and the environmental protection unit based at Wrexham were called to the scene after being notified by the alarm company of an incident and discovered a man with chemical flash burns to his face.

Paramedics were also called to the scene and transferred the 37- year- old, an employee of the company, to the Wrexham Maelor. His condition is not thought to be life threatening.

A spokesman from the Welsh Ambulance Service said: “We are treating this as a works accident and we did take a 37-year-old with minor injuries to the Maelor hospital.”

Firefighters closed down the section of the unit affected and wearing specialist gas tight suits cleaned up the chemicals involved. The management of the company liaised effectively with crews and assisted in evacuating the premises.

Paul Jenkinson from North Wales Fire and Rescue Service, said: "This incident was an excellent example of our cutting edge equipment and resources at work.

"It also highlights that we as a service have a wide range of equipment and procedures which enable us to respond to a range of incidents."
