A BUSINESSMAN rushed to the rescue of a couple whose microlight aircraft came crashing down by farmland.

Mike Kilgannon, of Chester Road, Rossett, instinctively ran over to the smashed craft and managed to pull the man and woman free.

He then guided them to a grass bank and helped further by giving reassurance to the casualties while the emergency services were called for help.

Mr Kilgannon, who runs a furniture restoration and manufacturing business from Waverton workshops close to the crash site near Chester, said: “I was still working when all of a sudden I heard a massive bang.

“I ran over to where the noise had come from and saw what had happened. Instinct just takes over in situations like that.

“I got to them as soon as I could and then had to try to get them away from the air craft and towards safety.”

Mr Kilgannon said the man had a deep cut on his nose and was in great pain.

“He thought that he could have a broken arm and leg. Also the lady was obviously very shocked after the crash.

“Although it was a terrible thing to happen, when you think about it the outcome could have been so much worse. It is only by the grace of God...”

Mr Kilgannon praised the emergency services for the way they handled the incident, which happened at Guy Lane Farm, Waverton at about 7pm on Wednesday.

He stressed they were on the scene very quickly and carried out their tasks in a highly professional manner.

“I am so glad that I was able to help in some way, I don’t know who the couple were or where they were from.”

Insp Adele Jones of Cheshire Police said the man and woman had sustained injuries which early indications suggested were minor in nature.
