A CAMPAIGN over a danger road that was the scene of a double-fatal crash is receiving growing support.

In March, two men died in a collision on the bridge which carries the A5 over the River Ceiriog near Chirk.

In the wake of the tragedy, mother-of-two Sally Poppit, 33, of Chirk, launched a campaign to have the busy road, which is the main route between North Wales and the Midlands, widened into a dual carriageway for around 20 miles between Ruabon and Nesscliffe, near Shrewsbury.

She said that in the weeks since she began the campaign, dubbed ROAR (Redesign Our A5 Road), it had attracted massive support both from local people and many others across the country.

Sally said: “At the start of the campaign, I set up a Facebook group, which now has almost 700 members. People from outside the area have posted comments on it.

“We have also had support from local councillors and parish councils in this area.

Everybody is saying this definitely needs sorting out.

“To back up the campaign, I will soon be putting in Freedom of Information requests to the highways authorities and police forces on either side of the border, asking for figures for accidents on that stretch of road over the past 10 years and for the type of vehicles involved.

“I don’t think we are likely to get a dual carriageway, especially as the Government is planning massive spending cuts, but at the very least we want a public inquiry held into just how dangerous this road really is.”

In March, Stuart Davies, 45, from Mold, was killed when the Mercedes he was driving collided with a cattle truck on the bridge.

The Airbus worker and the driver of the cattle truck, Hefin Jones, 43, from South Wales, were declared dead on arrival at hospital.
