A YOUNG woman racially abused a black man and Taiwanese woman at Wrexham library, a court was told.

Jemma Rose Richards, 19, of Trevenna Way, admitted verbally abusing a witness at the library on Rhosddu Road on April 16.

The man had attempted to step in after Richards, who was with a male companion, began shouting insults at another man.

Rob Blakemore, prosecuting, said: “The witness was sitting down in the library at 4.30pm when the defendant came in, walked to the top floor and sat down.

“She began shouting obscenities at a black male sat at another table – things like ‘you f***ing n*****’ and asking him ‘have you got a Mars bar?’

“A Taiwanese lady came up the stairs and the defendant started shouting at her.

“There were then further taunts aimed at the black person and the witness noted the newspaper he was reading was shaking.

“He tried to intervene and they said ‘what are you looking at?’

“Security officers then arrived and escorted her out.”

When questioned by police, Richards said she could not recall the incident but did not deny that it happened.

She admitted a charge of using threatening words or behaviour which was racially aggravated.

Magistrates in Wrexham were told Richards consumed two bags of heroin a day and also drank.

Stephen Edwards, defending, said: “It’s not possible to put a positive gloss on this case.

“It is not an excuse but this young lady’s life is at a very low ebb. She has gone from a situation where she was on a stable methadone ‘script to one where she was drinking and taking heroin.

“She has very, very little recollection of what has gone on.”

Magistrates ordered the probation service to put together a report, with a view to imposing a drug rehabilitation requirement, before sentencing Richards on May 28.

She was bailed in the meantime on condition she is not found drunk in public and does not enter Wrexham library.
