A DENBIGH darts ace has enjoyed his best weekend since joining the ultra competitive PDC circuit.

Former Lakeside World Professional Darts champion Mark Webster reached the semi-finals of a Professional Darts Corp-oration event for only the second time on Saturday - and brilliantly repeated the last-four trick on Sunday!

Both competitions were held at Robin Park Tennis Centre in Wigan, with Saturday’s competition being a Players’ Championship event.

Webster, seeded 29 in the competition, opened with a 6-4 first round win over Steve Hine, before he held his nerve to edge out Tony Ayres 6-5 in round two.

And then came some notable Webster wins as he stepped up a gear.

In the third round he proved too strong for former world number one Colin ‘Jaws’ Lloyd, beating him 6-3, while another tense 6-5 result went Mark’s way in the fourth round as he beat impressive Aussie Paul Nicholson.

The last-four was Webster’s best performance before the weekend, and he emulated this feat thanks to a fantastic 6-2 quarter-final triumph against world number three and current Premier League champion James Wade.

That was to be the Saturday high point for Webster, however, as he was denied a final fling in a 6-2 semi-final reverse to Andy Hamilton.

In the final Aussie wizard Simon Whitlock swept Hamilton aside 6-0.

Former Lakeside champion Webster’s run to the semi-final was his best display of the year and only his second since joining the PDC in 2009.

It also increases his chances of qualifying for the summer’s StanJames.com World Matchplay.

Semi-finals were a big feature of the weekend as Webster made it through to the last-four in Sunday’s UK Open qualifier.

Straightforward wins over Patrick Pace (6-3), Nick Fullwell (6-3) and Mark Frost (6-1) opened the campaign for the Denbigh ace, before he took his third sudden death win of the weekend in his 6-5 fourth round defeat of Matt Clark.

Things were a little easier in the 6-4 quarter-final success versus Nigel Heydon, while Webster appeared to be heading for his first ever PDC final when he led the Flying Scotsman Gary Anderson 5-3 in the semi-finals.

However, Anderson reeled off three legs in a row to take the match 6-5 and book his fourth final appearance of 2010, where he was beaten 6-2 by James Wade.

The fine weekend moves Webster back into the top-30 in the PDC order of merit, within touching distance of former Premier League star Hawaii 501 Wayne Mardle, who is ranked 29th.
