THE Wrexham Science Festival has launched its annual themed competition.

This year the festival’s events are based around four topics: Earth and the Universe, The Animal World, Human Mind and Body and Bright Sparks.

Organisers say this year’s competition gives people the opportunity to showcase their photography skills to interpret these themes. The contest is open to all age ranges and there is also the opportunity for people to enter as a group.

Katie Dutton, events co-ordinator at Glyndwr University, is looking forward to receiving the entries. She said: “It really doesn’t matter whether people are the next David Bailey or just a skilled amateur, there is so much scope for interpreting these themes.

“I think it will be really interesting to see people’s different thoughts. They can enter as many photographs under whichever of the themes they choose.”

The deadline for all entries is Thursday June 3. There will be a winner and commended photograph chosen for each category. The final winners will be entered for the opportunity to win the Best In Festival Audience Award which will be voted for throughout the festival.

The competition has been sponsored by Wrexham-based solicitors Allington Hughes and local camera shop Vostro Cameras. The prizes awarded to the winner of the age categories will be vouchers for photography accessories and the prize for the group category will be a photography masterclass with one of Glyndwr University’s photography lecturers. A special prize will be awarded to the winner of the Best in Festival Audience Award.

Wrexham Science Festival is now its 12th year. It is being launched on Thursday, July 1 by Johnny Ball and runs until Saturday, July 10.

The annual interactive science family day, Scientriffic, will be on Saturday, July 3.
