RELIEF is finally on the cards for Mold residents who have suffered years of flooding misery.

The Welsh Assembly Government has announced it is to put forward a £200,000 grant to set the wheels of the town’s Flood Alleviation Scheme in motion.

Dozens of homes and businesses have been affected by floods over the years due to heavy rain causing the River Alyn to overflow.

The alleviation scheme was set up to improve defences upstream of the river’s Leadmills Bridge and to widen channels downstream in order to improve the river’s ability to cope with floodwaters.

Delyn AM Sandy Mewies said: “It will enable further design and development of a scheme which will protect the area from flooding in the future.

“Following meetings with Flintshire Council, Mold Town Council and others, I continued to lobby Jane Davidson for this money, which came from the European Competitiveness Programme.”

According to the Environment Agency, once the scheme is finished there will only be a risk of flooding once every 200 years. Previously there was a risk of flooding every 25 years.

Mrs Mewies added: “It has been vitally important this design and development scheme was funded and once completed I hope everyone concerned will move forward quickly to provide the flood alleviation scheme.

“I will continue to support the scheme until it is completed.”
