THREE brothers are the latest campaigners doggedly trying to save an historic church from closure.

The congregation at St David’s Church on Croes Atti Lane, Oakenholt, must raise £12,000 to save the church or worshippers will be out in the cold.

Coffee mornings and a jewellery party have already helped to raise some of the funds.

Now siblings Mark Lloyd, 30, Keith Lloyd, 28, and Robert Massey, 19, from Flint, will embark on the challenge of a lifetime to try to raise the remainder of the money.

“When the news came of possible closure, we decided to do what we could to save this historic building which has served members of the local community since 1872,” Mark told the Leader.

“I was christened and married at the church and Keith is hoping to be married there next year. It has been part of my life for 30 years.

“It would be a real shame if it was to close.”

The brothers will don their walking boots and complete the Snowdon Horseshoe hike – five summits with a total ascent of 6,560ft.

With some brave friends, the group will scramble to Crib Coch (3,028ft), and traverse Knifes Edge before dropping to Bwlch Goch and climbing Crib y Dysgyl (3,494ft).

They will reach the summit of Mount Snowdon (3,650ft) and begin the last climb to Y Lliwedd (2,946ft).

The final nail in the Horseshoe will be Gallt y Wenallt (2,031ft).

“I have had a passion in walking for five years and have climbed Snowdon many times,” added Mark. “We will all need to take extreme care, especially when scrambling across Knife Edge. This is a very exposed ridge with potential danger.

“If we fall to the right we fly and if we fall to the left we slide fast.”

The brothers will compete their hike on Saturday, May 29. To sponsor them call Mark on 07730 677440.
